When I wake in a strange forest, surrounded by “monsters” and “magic,” I’m sure it’s all some reality-TV prank. My carnival job means I know a lot about all the ways people can be fooled.
And the “orc” telling me we’re goddess-matched and married has got to be the biggest hoax of all. Branikk’s movie-star good looks and charming words are way too good to be true.
But I keep making ludicrous things appear in ways Hollywood special effects can’t match, a unicorn just spoke to me, and when I get an eyeful—a really big eyeful—of Branikk, he’s green everywhere.
When a talking dog asks for our help to save his people from soul-sucking fae, I finally start to believe I’m in Faerie. But I’m not falling for a handsome guy ever again, no matter how much Branikk’s touch sets me on fire. I’m not. Not even a little bit.
